Shave the Date: It's Movember First

Posted on 05:00 by rendy orton
Don't forget to shave tomorrow, fellas!

That way you'll start Movember on the right foot.

As your facial hair grows throughout the month, you can answer the inevitable inquiries (why are you growing that sweet and uber-manly 'stache?) by explaining it's to raise awareness for "men's health issues, specifically prostate and testicular cancer initiatives."

If you want to join the official Movember crew, you can do so at their website.

I'm probably going unofficial this year, but I'll host a shindig near the end of the month for us to celebrate our mustaches and support for those who have grown facial hair.

So start growing that fu manchu, and speak up when asked why you're indulging your manliness this month!

PS If you need one more reason to join the cause, even Tobias Funke is doing it.

PPS Or, if you're like me and it takes a solid 3 weeks to get anything decent, maybe don't shave. I won't tell anyone, as long as you don't tell on me.

Ingrid Michaelson Gets Me

Posted on 07:00 by rendy orton
I heard of Ingrid Michaelson for the first time when a friend shared "The Way I Am" with me.

Loved the song.
Loved the music video, too.

Some of her songs are simple, some are complex, but I like that I can relate to a lot of her songs.

She seems to think like me on a lot of topics, or at least her songs convey messages I agree with.
Equality, being non-judgmental, and of course various aspects of dating/love.

Perhaps it helps that my new glasses are kinda like hers.
But more than likely that has nothing to do with it.

Yesterday, Rachel introduced me (via her blog) to this nice Elvis Presley cover by Ingrid:

"(I Can't Help) Falling in Love with You"

In case that wasn't enough for you to decide if you like her stuff or not, here are two more:

"You and I"

"Blood Brothers"

Are you convinced yet? I hope so.

If not, that's okay. I'll take you the way you are.

Star Wars Lesson: Genealogy is Important

Posted on 07:00 by rendy orton
Just about anything having to do with Star Wars will catch my eye.
What can I say, I'm a big nerd.

Well, I saw this yesterday, and I couldn't help but laugh and then share it.

If you don't know why that's funny, you need to watch the original Star Wars trilogy.

But this clip that might give you enough to piece together the importance of genealogy.

Awkward.

16 Ways To Blow a Marriage

Posted on 06:30 by rendy orton
I've never been married.

So I can't speak from experience on how to keep a marriage intact.

Yet I can see the wisdom (and honest humor) in this guy's blogpost, which he gained through the sad experience of several failed marriages.

After you read his tips, please come back and add any additional thoughts you have in the comments.

CLICK HERE TO READ "16 Ways I Blew My Marriage".

PS The "bonuses" on some of the tips are pretty funny.

What did you think? Anything else you'd add, married or long-dating friends?

Current Commercial Successes

Posted on 22:20 by rendy orton
Recovering from reconstructive surgery on a torn Achilles means you have a lot of time to watch TV.

Most commercials are an annoyance.
But some aren't so bad, or can even be entertaining.

Here are three that I kinda like right now.

1) NFL: Player safety with Tom Brady & Ray Lewis

2) Temptations: Cat food

and my current favorite:

3) Nissan Altima: Tire-fill alert system

Any others that you've gotten a major kick out of lately?

Monday Get-Movin' Music: Good Mornin' from Singin' in the Rain

Posted on 08:00 by rendy orton
We're due for a classic movies resurgence.

My friend Adrienne discovered the movie Good News this weekend.
And this morning I showed my twin nieces a few dance clips from old movies.

The girls were enthralled by all of them.

Emily and I tried to watch Singin' in the Rain once, but we started it too late and fell asleep.
But watching the song "Good Mornin'" from that show really captured the girls' attention.

Here's them during the first viewing:

And here's them for viewings 2 through 5:

There was a whole lotta wiggling and dancing, plus they've been humming and singing the tune all day.

Want to get in on the fun? Well here's the clip for ya!

Now THAT is a good way to start off the week.

IMHO: Don't Tear Your Achilles Tendon

Posted on 07:00 by rendy orton
It isn't worth it.

Really, there's almost no upside that I've been able to see so far.

Day 1: Tues, Sept 25
I tore an Achilles tendon a couple weeks ago on a work trip to the SF Bay area.
As is apparently the norm for these injuries, I was playing basketball when it happened.

Funny thing is, I had a feeling beforehand that I shouldn't play.
Didn't have my basketball shoes or ankle braces that I'd normally wear, and it just didn't feel right.

Well, ten minutes into the game, I was playing well and then, when going after a rebound, I suddenly felt like someone had kicked me in the Achilles as hard as they could. Searing pain and an inability to put any pressure on the ball of my foot were what got me worried immediately about a ruptured Achilles, but I hoped it was just a really bad sprained ankle. I really, really, really hoped.
On the night of the injury;
yes, that's a McDonalds to-go bag filled with ice.
Day 2: Wed, Sept 26
The leg continued to hurt like crazy the next day, and I couldn't walk very well on it. However, since we were on the business trip, we still went to the client site and I just hobbled around.

Hobbling through the airport was not too fun, but I was happy to be getting home where I could rest easier and get it checked by a doctor if it didn't feel better after a few days.
Next evening, back in SLC
Day 3: Thurs, Sept 27
My family had a few Bledsoe boots laying around from high school injuries, so I used one of those to be able to get around and function semi-normally. Driving my car was impossible, since it's a manual transmission, but my dad was kind enough to lend me his auto transmission car for a little while.

Day 7: Mon, Oct 1
Unfortunately, my walking ability hadn't improved after a week of that, so I figured it was time to visit an orthopedic specialist.

The docs at TOSH were booked through November, but they referred me their colleague, Dr Spencer Richards, at Intermountain Healthcare's Sports Medicine Specialists Group up in Bountiful, UT.

Fortunately, he could fit me in for an appointment the next day.

Day 8: Tues, Oct 2
Dr Richards was very friendly and easy to talk with, and he used an ultrasound to see clearly that my Achilles tendon had fully ruptured.
Let's just say the big black gap in the middle is a bad thing
Since Dr Richards doesn't do too many reconstruction operations, he referred me to Dr Troy Gorman at LDS Hospital, who has lots of experience and could probably fit me into the operating schedule soon.

Day 9: Wed, Oct 3
Wearing my Bledsoe boot, I hobbled into Dr Gorman's office, and he was able to quickly agree with Dr Richards' conclusion. Just to be sure no bone fragment had been ripped from my heel when the tendon tore, he took some xrays of my ankle. Thankfully, my heel was perfectly intact.

Things seemed to be moving very quickly at this point, and Dr Gorman said he could fit me in for surgery the next day. Yikes. I was a little nervous, but I knew it needed to be done and that I'd rather do it sooner than later, so he added me to the operating schedule and I spread the word to family, friends, and work.

Day 10: Thurs, Oct 4
My mom gave me a ride to LDS hospital bright and early. I checked in, filled out the necessary paper work, and got into this super awesome patient get-up. One nicety is that they let you wear your own underoos plus those pants, so your derriere isn't open to the world in the back of the smock. It's all about the small victories, right?
I kept the other sock, too, so I'd have a matching pair after.
As for pain management during the operation, they used both a nerve blocker and a general anesthetic, so I didn't feel anything and I couldn't even move my leg to cause any complications. I'm glad they did, because it would have been weird to be awake for the 1-1.5 hr surgery.
I don't like needles, but this one was absolutely necessary.
Afterwards, I was in the post-anesthesia room for a bit, and then my mom and I got to hang out in a private recovery room for maybe 30-45 mins. When I felt ready, they wheeled me down to the front doors, put me in the car, and let my mom take me home.
Yes, I was groggy at this point, but aware enough to ask my mom to take a picture haha
I know I've still got a lot of healing and then rehab ahead, but I'm glad to be on my way to recovery. And I'm grateful to all who have helped so far as well as those who will help in the future.

You can bet there will be updates and further posts in this 4-6 month long road to full health.

Bob Marley - Realist Philosopher

Posted on 07:00 by rendy orton
“He’s not perfect. You aren’t either, and the two of you will never be perfect. But if he can make you laugh at least once, causes you to think twice, and if he admits to being human and making mistakes, hold onto him and give him the most you can. He isn’t going to quote poetry, he’s not thinking about you every moment, but he will give you a part of him that he knows you could break. Don’t hurt him, don’t change him, and don’t expect for more than he can give. Don’t analyze. Smile when he makes you happy, yell when he makes you mad, and miss him when he’s not there. Love hard when there is love to be had. Because perfect guys don’t exist, but there’s always one guy that is perfect for you.”
― Bob Marley

Too often, I forget how obviously flawed I am, and I start to think that I have to be perfect.

What a pile of horse hooey.

Though striving daily to be better is of course a positive thing, I'm all too often terribly hard on myself for making mistakes and falling short of perfection.

Well, I'm going to work on accepting me for me.
I hope we all can accept ourselves eventually.

The Soul Yearns for Beautiful, Uplifting Music

Posted on 07:00 by rendy orton
Are you a music addict like me?

I have music playing around me pretty much all day long.
While I get ready in the morning, in the car, at work, at lunch, at home in the evenings, while I work out...
Sometimes it's for an energy pick-me-up, or a little background sound to help me focus, or because I just don't like the quiet.

My musical tastes are varied, but often it's current pop or rock or country that I listen to.

Which is why I was excited to get an invitation to a free concert by the Utah Chamber Artists at the Cathedral of the Madeleine in downtown Salt Lake City on Sept 17th.
The concert was called "Shadows & Light", and I was impressed with the creative use of lighting and locations throughout the performance.
Not only did the orchestra and choir play in the front and back, but smaller groups played from darkened alcoves, behind that front screen in the picture above, and up in the back balcony next to the organ pipes (in the picture below).
During songs, they played with the lighting, including raising the lights on certain paintings or areas of the building during crescendos in the music. I found it all to be beautifully done in creating not just a concert, but an experience.

The song selections included classical pieces by Bach, Vivaldi, Beethoven, Brahms, and Handel, along with more-contemporary and less-known (to me, at least) composers like Kaminsky, Dvorak, Piazzolla, Barnum, Hundley, Janacek, and Bradford.

Free performances of this excellent quality are few and far between.
Which is why I will gladly pay for a ticket or tickets to their Christmas concert on December 3rd.

Who wants to join me?

Metallica Monday: Fade to Black

Posted on 07:00 by rendy orton
I like to pick a Metallica Monday song that fits what's going on in my life, either in the title, the lyrics, or the subject matter of the video.

Which is why this week I chose:

Fade to Black

More extensive post to come, but I had surgery last Thursday to reconstruct a torn Achilles tendon.

Going into the hospital, I thought I'd just get a local anesthetic and a nerve blocker during the procedure, but the surgical nurse and anesthesiologist informed me that I'd be knocked out.

It kinda makes sense, and I'm glad they did, because laying still on my stomach for an hour and a half would be tough, and it'd be one more concern for the surgical team to worry about.

Anyway, after a minor anesthetic, they injected the nerve blocker in the back of my knee, and then they completed the trio with a stronger anesthetic which quickly made everything "fade to black".

Next thing I knew, I woke up in the post-op room.

Yes, there really is a Metallica song for every occasion.

My Little Rascal-ly Amigo

Posted on 06:30 by rendy orton
I'm behind on my blogposts, and some of you may not even know I tore my Achilles tendon.

Well, before I'd been to the doctor to find that out, I just thought I'd majorly sprained my ankle.

And during that pre-knowledge-of-torn-Achilles time, I realized a life-long dream when Nick and I stopped by Walmart to get some keys made for the office:

I rode around the store on an Amigo.

Yep, that's a motorized shopping cart I'm rocking.
Not quite as sleek or sexy as the Rascal I'd hoped for, but an acceptable substitute.

I do have to admit something, though.

After riding the Amigo for a few minutes, I felt awkward.
The cart is ridiculously slow, and even with my hurt foot I didn't feel right or like I fit the profile of a person who would normally be driving one around a store.

So when we stopped to look at sunglasses, I ditched it and walked the rest of our time in Walmart.

Oh well, it's still something to check off my bucket list.

Have you ever ridden one of those bad boys? What was your experience?

Would You Ride a Cardboard Bike?

Posted on 07:00 by rendy orton
I love technology, especially when it's reinventing something familiar in a new way.

So this article really interested me.

Who thinks of this stuff?
Building a bike out of cardboard?

And making it strong enough to be able to carry almost 500 lbs?
Now that's durable!

Granted, I don't envision many 500 lb people riding bikes (props to those that do), but what about people transporting water or other supplies? This could really come in handy in developing countries.

Or it could just be a convenient around-town bike, for those who don't want their nice bike to get stolen.

Would you try riding one? I'm gonna keep an eye on this.

Shaken, Not Stirred: Happy International Bond Day

Posted on 07:00 by rendy orton
Bond. James Bond.

I've loved the British secret agent since I was a kid.
Crazy to think the series began 18 years before I was even born... and is still going.

Yep, Ian Fleming's character first came to life on the big screen 1962's Dr No.

Fifty years later, we've seen 6 actors play 007 in 22 films, with Skyfall (the 23rd) being released later this month in the UK and early November in the USA.

Countless villains and henchmen have died at the MI6 agent's hand.

I can't wait to see him take out a whole lot more.

Happy International Bond Day!

Das Ist Mein Oktoberfest

Posted on 07:00 by rendy orton
It's harvest season.

No, I don't have any crops to harvest, but I do like that this time of year brings Oktoberfest fun.

Snowbird puts on great festivities, including bands, dancing, side acts, and all sorts of activities for kids.

I saw Megan up there, too. She works for Snowbird, which means she and her co-workers deserve the credit for putting together the entire well-organized festival. Don't you love knowing important people?
Great job, Megan!

Plus, I was happy to get up into the mountains, where the air is clean and crisp.

The final two days of Snowbird's Oktoberfest 2012 are Oct 6-7 (this weekend), so get up there!
